Port Operative Apprenticeship Level 2

The aim of this course is to provide the theoretical knowledge, practical skills and behaviours of Port Operatives in order to promote effective, efficient and safe working practices in the Port sector.

Purpose

Port Operatives have a diverse role and are key in enabling businesses to deliver on time and safely. Port Operatives may be involved in:

  • Loading / unloading, handling and securing cargo
  • Warehousing, storage and retrieval
  • Roll on, roll off (RoRo) vessel operations
  • Onshore mooring and vessel handling operations
  • Passenger operations
  • Workplace transport operations
  • Infrastructure operations
  • Heavy machinery operations, including specialised lifting and handling equipment

Content

This is a vocational qualification that is assessed via practical assessment, multiple choice examination and professional discussion. Apprentices will be trained to understand:

  • Safe and professional working practices
  • The importance of commercial principles
  • General port operating principles
  • The types of port operation and cargo handled at UK ports
  • Provision of port services
  • The types of plant, equipment, infrastructure and vessels found in UK ports
  • The principles of, and hazards associated with, berthing vessels
  • How to control vehicle movements
  • The delivery of high quality work
  • The importance of teamwork and effective communication

All apprentices must attain competence in the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by a Port Operative as detailed below:

  • Safe lifting operations
  • Operation of a range of plant equipment
  • Effective, accurate and prompt cargo handling
  • High levels of customer service
  • Being an effective team member
