Extended Diploma in Marine Engineering Level 3

The aim of this course is to provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills to work in marine engineering.

Purpose

This qualification, supported by the Engineering Council and recognised by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEst) for EngTech status and covers the skills and knowledge of one or more roles in a wide variety of fabrication and welding activities including:

  • Marine Engineer
  • Electrical Maintenance Engineer
  • Mechanical Installations Engineer
  • Mechanical Testing Engineer
  • Mechanical Maintenance Engineer
  • Welding Operative
  • Electromechanical Installer

It is designed for learners who are undertaking a SEMTA apprenticeship. Learners must have the potential to achieve the assessment criteria set out in the units.

Content

The extended diploma comprises a Level 3 Engineering qualification with the inclusion of technically specific Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) options:

  • Engineering practices pathway
  • Technical support pathway

In the context of apprenticeship frameworks, the technically specific pathway must be delivered and assessed in a sheltered working environment before the starting delivery and assessment of the Level 3 components in a working environment.

The qualification also consists of mandatory and optional assessment routes, for example:

  • Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
  • Using and interpreting engineering data and documentation
  • Working efficiently and effectively in engineering

Evidence for this qualification will be assessed in accordance with the SEMTA engineering assessment strategy, which has been created from engagement with stakeholders in the engineering sector.

Objective

This qualification provides the skills and knowledge needed for occupations in marine engineering. The achievement of this qualification will encourage an employee to value their contribution to the workplace, and it will develop their skills and potential within the marine engineering field. Completion of this qualification can aid progression to Level 3 qualifications and/or potential employment.
