NPORS Chainsaw Course

The aim of this course is to provide the theoretical knowledge and practical skills for the safe, competent operation of a chainsaw.

At the end of course delegates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
  • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
  • Locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
  • Locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
  • Explain the techniques to service, sharpen and maintain the chainsaw
  • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
  • Select suitable type of machine relative to the work being undertaken
  • Identify and maintain PPE appropriate to chainsaw operation, maintenance and cross cutting
  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
  • Operate machinery safely and efficiently
  • Explain and identify tension and compaction when cutting
  • Understand environmental considerations
  • Safely store / transport chainsaw and dispose of cut materials
  • Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures
