The aim of this course is to deliver a unique way of learning the key skills necessary to enter the offshore renewables and subsea sectors.


This 2 year qualification is delivered between Port Training Services’ facilities at the Port of Blyth and at the Newcastle College Energy Academy in Wallsend. The qualification will allow you to develop the practical skills and experience that leading energy sector employers are looking for. This unique way of learning will provide you a route into the offshore renewables and subsea sectors.

Whist at the Port of Blyth you will develop your skills using industry-standard facilities including access to a wind turbine nacelle and a variety of subsea equipment (valves, motors, pumps), as well as access to the Royal IHC Hi-Traq machine, a unique self-levelling suspension system for the installation and burial of power cables.

Whilst studying you will receive regular guest lectures and workshops from employers who will highlight their experience and outline the opportunities available upon successful completion of your course.

  • Delivering engineering processes safely as a team
  • Engineering product design and manufacture
  • Applied commercial and quality principles of engineering
  • Specialist engineering project
  • Pneumatics and hydraulic systems
  • Fabrication manufacturing processes
  • Electrical power distribution and transmission
  • Maintenance of mechanical systems


Once you have successfully completed your studies, both Port Training Services and the College will work with you to outline your progression opportunities. This may include progressing onto a Foundation Degree at Newcastle College University Centre or securing employment or an apprenticeship within the offshore and subsea engineering sector.
